Cut-off Jeans Shorts Made Famous by Catherine Bach’s Character Are Taking Over Southern California Beaches, To the Approval Of the Bar Blogger

Of all the casual fashion trends that have become popular the past few years – trucker hats, baggy clothes, shorts practically to the ankles (which really don’t actually qualify them as shorts) and body-covering tattoos – there’s not one that I have adopted or even really have liked.

But I most certainly wholeheartedly approve of the latest trend that’s hit this summer: The return of the Daisy Duke shorts.

These are the short, cut-off jeans favored by girls in the South for decades and made nationally popular by Catherine Bach’s character “Daisy Duke” in the TV series “Dukes of Hazzard.”

Of course, us Southerners had known about them prior to the show. Girls have worn them for years, and more for comfort than style. Blue jeans are comfortable and are a huge part of Southern culture but it’s just too darned humid to wear them during the summer. So girls took to cutting them off below the butt cheeks and making shorts out of them.

Whether the girls were aware of it or not, it turned out to be look that is flat-out HOT!

The look of girls wearing Daisy Duke shorts is flat-out HOT!

And now the Daisy Dukes are back!

At least at the beaches in Southern California, where girls have been sporting them all summer. They are the most popular shorts being worn; a full 50% of all girls are in them now. Look around the beach and the bars and that’s what you’ll see, Daisy Dukes. There are different shades of them, slightly different styles and lengths, but they are all Daisy Dukes.

Apparently, it’s caught on elsewhere, as well. Once alerted to this trend, a Canadian friend reported seeing them in Toronto. I’ve not been to the South this summer to report on how many girls are wearing them in Alabama, Georgia and especially Florida, Tennessee and Texas (three long-time Daisy Duke “hot-spots,” Texas girls adding fire to the furnace by also donning cowboy hats) but there’s little doubt they are everywhere. It’s a cool wardrobe choice in the sweltering Southern summers.

The Daisy Duke shorts are a popular fashion trend, especially at Southern Calfornia beaches.

Danica Patrick is wearing them in a GoDaddy commercial.

Just wait for college football season to see ‘em all over the tailgate parties!

Frankly, I’m not sure what started the trend. Perhaps someone wore them in a movie I didn’t see or on a TV show I don’t watch (hey, I’m spending my time researching bars for this blog and PubClub.com!).

Daisy Dukes are great wardrobe for dancing when the clothes get clammy.

But whatever the reason matters not to me. All I want to do is applaude the girls for wearing them while at the same time hoping this is no passing trend.
