Crimson Tide Fans to Party at the Varsity in Santa Monica and Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach
It’s the Game of the Century. Until the next Game of the Century, of course.
Even with all the uber-hype, the countdown on ESPN that started the previous week and all of college football analysts’ eyes pointing to the date for weeks, the Alabama-LSU game has BIG written all over it, for it’s two teams of seeming NFL caliber (it would be hard to argue otherwise for anyone who watched the Monday Night game between Baltimore and Jacksonville) going after it in a typically hard SEC matchup.
It’s #1 vs. #2 on Saturday, Nov. 5, and the winner will likely advance to (and win) the BCS National Championship.
This is, of course, what sports bars are all about: Putting on games so fans and alumni can watch their teams.
For those living in Los Angeles that want to REALLY get into it, there are two places where Alabama alumni will be rolling into for the epic matchup. The official Alabama game-watching bar is The Varsity in Santa Monica (shame on South for shoving Bama fans to the side when Michigan plays; I bet it would love to have the group in there for this game!).
And for those in the South Bay who don’t want to drive to Santa Monica – read, party, and this includes the PubClub.com Bar Blogger – it’s Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach. Sharkeez has drink specials for college football games, including Budweiser and Bud Light drafts for $3.25.
In each place, expect a lot of loud and proud Bama fans waving crimson-and-white shakers, yelling “Roll Tide” – it’s a tradition to do it on kickoffs, but only when Alabama kicks – and at the end doing the “Rammer Jammer” cheer, a post-game winning tradition that, oddly enough, the school administration now won’t let the band play at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Kickoff is at 5 p.m., PT. Expect Bama fans to start the party well before that time. And to continue well afterward, as well.
The Varsity is located at 6311 Wilshire Blvd.
Sharkeez is located at 52 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach.
