Jungle Punks Hipster Orchestra Releases The Nirvana Sessions on iTunes
A band called the Jungle Punks Hipster Orchestra has taken a bit of the grunge out of the grungy.
In September, it released The Nirvana Sessions, an album available on iTunes featuring not a grinding guitar and the gritty voice of Kurt Cobain, but violins and an an orchestra. With no words.
It is a collaboration with Justin Shukat of Nirvana Publisher Primary Wave, who said, “Nirvana’s material is a very serious deal.
“I liked the concept of the Hipster Orchestra covering the album for the anniversary of Nevermind because it doesn’t try to re-write these songs in a context that competes…this is just about doing a really smart tribute to the material.
“I truly think this is a release that’s going to find its way into many different markets.”
The group, created as “a joke” by Jungle Punks CEO and founder Jared Gutstadt, has covered other songs and posted them on YouTube, The Strokes “Under Cover of Darkness” and MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.”
Jungle Punks is a music licensing company.
The band is comprised of up to eight musicians who look as if they should be playing songs more suited for Carnegie Hall than covering Nirvana’s landmark album.
“The Hipster Orchestra started as a joke,” Gutstadt said, “but it has snowballed into a real band.. It’s a simple concept. We took modern hit indie songs and re-imagined them as string arrangements for a civilized dinner party.
The album can be purchased here on iTunes.
